The mighty Zambezi River, the location of the 2001 Camel White Water Challenge, reached its highest level in 25 years, at peak flow in May 2001. An estimated 10 000 cubic meters of water per second thundered over the Victoria Falls, into the formidable Batoka Gorge, home to the world's greatest one day rafting experience.
The river is slowly dropping and it is evident that by September, the Zambezi will be at the idyllic high-water rafting level. While this will be the highest river level to host a competition on the Zambezi (and the biggest volume river in the history of the CWWC), it is still considered a safe level for expert rafters. And expert rafters they are with the top 20 raft teams in the world participating in the 2001 Camel White Water Challenge
(CWWC).
The 2001 CWWC takes place in Livingstone, Zambia, from the 4th-10th September. Participants will be based at the Sun Camel Falls Resort, on the banks of the Zambezi River, overlooking the majestic Victoria Falls. The programme guarantees spectacular raft and kayak action, adventure sports, African music and culture, breath-taking scenery and abundant wildlife. This CWWC defines the spirit of adventure!

Teams qualify through National and Continental Selections, thus ensuring that participants at the CWWC are truly world class.
The Russian's are the current world champions and will be a difficult team to beat. However, Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, USA, Italy and South Africa all have strong teams and are favourites for finishing in the top positions.
T
he host nation, Zambia, will be watched closely due to their home advantage and superior knowledge of the river.
In the Women's category, New Zealand are the defending champions but it will be a tightly contested battle with the Czech Republic, South Africa and USA, all boasting strong teams.
Aside from the point-scoring Raft Sprint, Raft Slalom, Kayak Downriver and Raft Downriver, the CWWC features the Raft and Kayak Rodeo. The Zambezi is renown as a warm, huge volume, "friendly" river. This combination provides copious opportunities for safe, yet spectacular action. Competitors are given an opportunity to express their most "radical"
maneuvers to the camera's and spectators.
The Kayak Rodeo will take place at Rapid #12B and the Raft Rodeo at the notorious #18 (Oblivion). Points are awarded for the longest surfs, most radical
maneuvers, spectacular flips and control or lack thereof!
